The son of blues drummer Calvin Jackson and grandson of legendary bluesman R. L. Burnside, Cedric grew up immersed in the Hill Country blues tradition. Raised in his grandfather’s home in Holly Springs, Mississippi, he began touring at just 13, stepping in on drums for his grandfather’s band after overlapping with his father’s tenure.

Over the years, Burnside has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists, including R. L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Kenny Brown, Richard Johnston, Widespread Panic, T-Model Ford, Paul “Wine” Jones, Jimmy Buffett, Afrissippi, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

His 2021 album I Be Trying won that category at the 64th Annual Grammys, and his 2024 release Hill Country Love received Grammy and Libera Award nominations.

A multiple Blues Music Award winner for “Instrumentalist – Drums,” Burnside is also a 2021 recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor in the U.S. for folk and traditional arts.
